An Outfit Gets Awarded, A Wormhole Awaits,
a case is made for short hair & I like how these bag designers have handled things
Charlie Rosen and I met up for drinks in Williamsburg last month and I’m finally getting around to awarding her with Best Outfit for showing up in the above look and absolutely dunking on the rest of us stay puft marshmallow slobs. So I don’t overuse the word “chic,” I just Googled some synonyms, but none quite hit the bullseye for just how elegantly uncomplicated, smart and exciting her ensemble was, so chic it is (but also elegantly uncomplicated, smart and exciting). It was miserably cold that week and she could have just phoned it in, but every piece was perfectly considered - we have a pop of color, a fur trimmed glove, and a tasteful leopard print! Wait - I’m also just now remembering a brooch on her lapel. So far that’s 4 points of visual interest and then she makes it look effortless by styling it all with - not a jean - but a cord, a headband and a sophisticated long brown coat. Furthermore she gets ‘em on the backfoot, literally, with a slingback loafer and socks. Best of all, she had the confident poise of a person who know how to dress cozily for cold weather while nailing a fire look and achieving a compact silhouette. Hotdog!
Now on to quantum physics. I believe there’s a wormhole awaitin’ and I can prove it by recounting how I once saw a woman in a mall in Visalia, CA in the 1980's with dark blonde hair down to her knees. I only saw her from the back for a second, but she seemed to be in her early 50’s and I sensed it was me in the future. And just in case I end up back at that wormhole in the next few years, I've been using the entire ROZ line to maintain the health of my hair as I try to see how long I can grow it. You can try it, too and get 15% off any full price item with code Sissy15. I love the shampoo, conditioner, styling oil and milk serum.
And if I weren’t taking this potential glitch in spacetime so very seriously, I would have been influenced into cutting it short like 4 of the most particularly sexy and smart and talented women I know and follow have. Isabelle Albuquerque, Stacey Nishimoto, Kayten Schmidt and Vanessa Cuccia are all sporting what Stacey calls “a gentleman’s cut”. I DM’d each to ask what the impetus for a chop had been and they all replied with very relatable reasons: either long hair had become an annoyance, or had lost its luster, or it was a now-or-never chance for a short cut that can grow back long again, or a totally spontaneous move performed one morning with kitchen scissors, or simply out of boredom. No regrets were expressed by any of them and if I had a prettier face I would totally do the same. In fact, here’s a collage of short hair styles I made a few years ago when I was itching for a change.
The only thing I’m should cut short at this time is this newsletter. I have homework for a writing class due, a closet to clean out and lots of items to list on my Depop. So stay tuned for that, especially if your shoe size is 7.5/38.
But what the heck, I feel compelled to linger here and share my latest obsessions on The Real Real and Vestiaire with you. First, Prada and Miu Miu knee length skirts. The not too A line, not too pencil-y kind that hit just at the knee so you can still see a little skin if you wear a tall boot or knee high sock. They. look cute with cardis, crop tops and big sweaters. I ordered a bunch, some on final sale. (I know I said never do this, oops.) Expect to see the ones that don’t fit me on Depop in a week or so.

My other current obsession: vintage Yves Saint Laurent Mombasa bags. My pal, confidant and previous outfit award winner, Kendra, showed up to lunch the other day carrying one with a horn handle which she’d been storing for 2 decades. And now I’m obsessed. She was a Barney’s shopgirl back in 2001 making bank and high commissions. I was a struggling first year school teacher. Thanks to The Real Real and the passage of time, I can now maybe afford one in fair to good condition. You can also find them more shittily photographed but competitively priced on Vestiaire. I love a hobo shape and an interesting handle. If I could afford a Bottega Sardine I would nab in a second and I also appreciate Puppets and Puppets spoon bag, phone bag, and banana handle bag even tho I’m less whimsical lately. And dear God please see into the heart of Completedworks and have them deem me worthy of being sent their new resin handle lunchbox bag. My Mombasa is on the way. The horn felt a bit boho for me so I went with silver filagree handle. Wish me luck. If I hate it, you know where to look out for it.
Okay, I really must go now but I’ll be back shortly to share my favorite FW24 runway moments.
